Carlos Xavier, a former Sporting player, reflected on the impact Pedro Gonçalves has had on the club and acknowledged that his departure was inevitable, as he is set to “sign the contract of a lifetime.”
Sporting may be on the verge of losing one of their most standout players of recent years—a possibility hinted at during the 2026/27 presentation match at Alvalade. Pedro Gonçalves left the pitch to a thunderous ovation and made a point of reciprocating the gesture by thanking the fans, in what may well have been his farewell.
Pedro Gonçalves came on in the second half of the match against Monaco and was substituted after 29 minutes, visibly moved by the applause and chants from the packed stadium.
Since then, rumors of a move to Bruno Lage’s Al-Diriyah have intensified, and his departure from Sporting seems inevitable. By all accounts, Al-Ittihad is also in the running.
Speaking exclusively to *Desporto ao Minuto*, Carlos Xavier highlighted the 28-year-old’s importance to the club, noting that all signs point to this past Saturday marking his farewell.
“If he came on in the second half and left shortly after to a standing ovation, everything suggests that was his final game for Sporting. It was a gesture of gratitude to the fans, and the fans reciprocated for everything he gave to the club,” he began.
“People won’t forget the great moments Pedro Gonçalves had at Sporting; he’s another one who leaves as ‘one of our own’,” he continued.
The former Sporting player went on to assure that the winger’s legacy would endure at Alvalade, highlighting some of his best qualities—foremost among them, his professionalism. “There was the ease with which he found the net—especially when he became the league’s top scorer in one of his first seasons—followed by his overall intelligence and technical quality. Above all, he is an excellent professional who gave his all to the club, and that is what we appreciate,” he highlighted.
When asked whether the loss of Pedro Gonçalves to Sporting would be more significant in sporting terms or within the dressing room, Carlos Xavier prefers to acknowledge that his departure is a natural progression and that the club could do nothing to prevent it.
“He is a player who leaves a mark through his time here and his quality, but there are moments when the club is powerless to act, especially since he is about to sign the contract of a lifetime. Naturally, Sporting is already working to fill the void left by his departure,” he noted.
