FC Porto has announced the signing of James Woodard for its basketball team, with the American player signing a one-season contract. The 32-year-old, 1.91-meter guard/forward joins the squad led by Fernando Sá, which is set to defend its national championship title and compete in the Champions League group stage.
“I’m joining a championship-winning team that had great success last season. I’m very happy to step into this system and culture. I just want to win. I’ve only heard good things about the city. It’s a great institution, and I’m thrilled,” he told the club’s media channels.
A native of Arcadia, Oklahoma, Woodard is an athletic, left-handed shooter who brings extensive experience from competitive European leagues. His career in Europe began in 2016 with the French club Rouen, following several seasons in the NCAA, the US collegiate league. Ahead of the 2019/20 season, he moved to Germany to play for Medi Bayreuth; he has also played for Acqua S.Bernardo Cantù (Italy), Peristeri (Greece), MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (Germany), Hamburg Towers (Germany), Esenler Erokspor (Turkey), Darussafaka (Turkey), and King Szczecin (Poland).
